Serious injuries from hit and run

A hit-and-run collision in downtown Yorkton on Friday night sent two teenaged girls to hospital.

A hit-and-run collision in downtown Yorkton on Friday night sent two teenaged girls to hospital.

After a short appeal to the public for help in locating the dark-colored SUV that struck the girls at an intersection near the west end of Broadway at approximately 11:00 pm that night, Yorkton RCMP announced the arrest of a male driver on Monday. He has been charged with two counts of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and one count of driving while disqualified.

"We're not releasing the accused's name at this time because we're still waiting to notify the victims," said Cpl. Clint Wikander of the Yorkton City Detachment.

The youths injured in the accident, whose names have also not been released, are both students at Yorkton's

Dreambuilders school. One spent the weekend in Yorkton hospital, while the other with more serious injuries was sent to Regina.

No official word about their conditions has been released, but staff and students at Dreambuilders had been told on Monday that both were in stable condition.

The alternate education facility of approximately 100 students was hit hard by news of the accident."We're a tight-knit group," said Dreambuilders principal Kelly Maddin. "All the kids know each other very well. It was tough--a lot of the kids knew about what happened, but no one knew any details."

Like most students of Dreambuilders, the injured girls were attending the school for a second chance at completing their high school education.

"They're great girls. The one is definitely a classroom leader here, and they're both very pleasant and get stuff done."

Staff and students sent an outpouring of cards and well-wishes on Monday.

Yorkton City RCMP say the investigation into the incident is continuing and ask anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.

The accused will appear in Yorkton Provincial Court on December 20 at 9:30 am.
