"We are very fortunate we live in a very generous and caring community," said Ross Fisher, Executive Director of The Health Foundation. Buying this bus was only possible because community service organizations came together to help us raise the necessary funds. A bus is expensive, once you add the wheelchair lift and the special additions we need on a bus like this, the cost is just over $98,000.
There were 5 community service organizations who contributed to the bus: Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation, $40,000; Yorkton Elks, $25,000; Yorkton Lions, $10,000; and, SecurTek Pioneers gave $5,000. In addition, residents and staff of the nursing home raised $6,500 and Louck's Pharmacy donated $5,000. The Health Foundation raised the remaining funds from a number of smaller donations.
"Having a bus is important to the quality of life of the residents in the Nursing Home," said Suzanne Beck, Director of Therapies for the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. "Most of our residents have mobility challenges, and without a special bus we are not able to take the residents out for group outings."
The bus will be used for a wide range of purposes, all of which enhance the quality of life of the residents in the nursing home and individuals who use the day wellness program. Twice a week the bus is used for the Day Wellness program, it picks up and drops off participants. Additionally the bus is used for a variety of recreational outings for residents throughout the year; everything from going to the mall to Christmas shop, or going to a baseball game.
Thanks to Donations from Service Clubs in Yorkton a new bus has been purchased and is now being used by the Residents of the Yorkton & District Nursing Home
