Yorkton Council designated events marking the efforts of two long-time service clubs at their regular meeting Monday.

Rotary Day was designated for Feb. 23, while Kinsmen and Kinette Day will be Feb. 21, as part of Kinsmen and Kinette Week Feb. 20 to 26.

In making the request on behalf of the Rotary Club of Yorkton, past president Terry Tyson noted this year marks the 107th anniversary of the club, adding Rotary now boasts 1.2 million members in more than 3,300 clubs in more than 200 countries.

Locally, the Rotary was established in 1927, and currently has 39 members.

Tyson said the local club has been supportive on many programs in the city including school scholarships, Meals On Wheels, and most recently initiating a reading program with Rotary members at Dr. Brass School.

Tracy Malayney made the presentation to Council on behalf of the local Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs. She said the two clubs with a combined membership of 38 have been active raising funds for various projects too.

At Christmas they were involved in collecting $2,200 in toys for the Salvation Army, and the Kinsmen supplies $10,000 for playground equipment for the Yorkton Nursery School.

Telemiracle, the major fundraising event provincially, is upcoming, and the Kinettes through its recent Catch and Release program have raised $13,000 for the provincial event, said Malayney.
