Yorkton's Senior Mobility Program has a new car thanks to the Saskatchewan Government Employees Union Public Service Local 1115.
The SGEU presented the keys to a new car to the Society for the Involvement of Good Neighbours (SIGN) in Yorkton last week, with SIGN planning to use the Chevrolet Cruze to transport seniors to appointments and take them to pick up groceries.
SIGN Director Andrew Sedley said in Yorkton there are a high percentage of seniors to serve, adding the car will help do that. He said the car will help allow seniors "enjoy and comfortably live in our community."
Sedley said many seniors seek low cost transportation options to get to medical appointments, recreation events and to get groceries. In 2010 the Senior Mobility car made 4588 trips, "and this year is even higher."
SIGN has been serving the community of Yorkton for 42 years, offering various support programs.
The Senior Mobility Program offers low cost transportation to seniors in the community. "SGEU members are part of the community," said Sid Wonitowy, executive member of SGEU Local 1115 in a release. "Our members work in social services and parks in the ministry of environment and take care of highways. We are in touch with community members and this donation is part of our commitment to the community of Yorkton. "SGEU 1115 represents approximately 460 members who work in Yorkton and area. The Local covers workers in an area north to Norquay, west to Leross, south to Esterhazy and east to the Manitoba border.
SGEU has also donated cars for senior transportation in Regina and Prince Albert.
