SGI is hoping its November traffic enforcement blitz will remind drivers that safe winter driving is not just about speed limits, but driving appropriately for conditions.
Last month, police around the province handed out 1,559 tickets for driving too fast. Among these were 1,468 for aggressive driving/speeding violations, 51 for driving at a speed greater than reasonable and safe, 29 for exceeding 60 km/h when passing an emergency vehicle 10 for exceeding 60 km/h when passing highway equipment and one for exceeding 60 km/h when passing a tow truck with lights flashing
In addition, there were 135 impaired driving-related offences, 102 tickets for distracted driving (92 of those for cellphone use), and 227 occupant restraint violations (for people not using a seatbelt/car seat/booster seat).
“Winter driving brings its own set of challenges with icy conditions, snow-packed streets and poor visibility,” said Kelly Brinkworth, a spokesperson for the provincial insurer. “SGI reminds motorists to slow down, drive safely and take care out there.”
