Shelwin House is holding a series of informational meetings in four locations across the region.

The Shelwin House Outreach program, which serves an area within 150 miles of the city "seeks to bring services to people who may not otherwise access service and to provide education about the aspects and factors of violence to individuals and communities in an effort to help communities develop capacity to establish supports and to help eradicate and prevent personal and family violence," explained Shannon Sullivan, outreach worker.

The meetings will include providing an overview of The Shelwin House and The Cycle of Violence and Types of Abuse etc..

"The presentations are open to everyone who is interested in the topics whether they have or are experiencing personal or family violence or just want to learn about it. When people learn more about any topic they come to understand more about it and may even be able to help someone else seek resources - it takes a community to raise a child -philosophy," said Sullivan.

"Shelwin House Outreach also supports and provides anti-violence education in schools and to community youth groups and community agencies and organizations. The outcome we hope to achieve is to educate youth that there are alternatives to violence and therefore we can break the cycle of violence."

Sullivan said there is also follow-up support for those who need it.

"The Shelwin House also provides a program called Crossroads which is a support group for women experiencing or who have experienced domestic violence. It is held every Thursday evening at 6:30 pm at SIGN on Broadway in room 136 (there is a direct entrance on the north side of the building)," she said.

The meetings are scheduled for the Yorkton Friendship Centre Sept. 18 and 5, St. Peter's Hospital, Melville, the first Tuesday of each month, Yorkton Public Library the second Tuesday of each month, Preeceville Library the third Tuesday of each month, and Langenburg Town Office the fourth Tuesday of each month.

There is no cost to host or attend any Shelwin House presentations.
