Darling
Figs Vision
7-out-of-10

Los Angeles based duo Figs Vision's latest release Darling is one of five records released this year alone. If that's not impressive enough, their brand of alternative disco pop and club music is a refreshing and soulful offering.

It's the apparent simplicity and catchiness of the tracks that make them instantly likable. The melodic hooks are all spot on and very pleasing. The beat is driving and steady, being a focal point of many of the tracks. A good number of real instruments are used on this record as well, giving a nice break from the complete synthesizer package. Another nice thing about the record is that each track has its own identity and rhythm. Opposed to dragging on, these tracks are short and sweet blasts of energy and dance inducing grooves.

From the car to the club, Darling could satisfy your need for a bouncy pop record with something interesting to offer.

Flightless Bird
Scott Barkan
9-out-of-10

When Scott Barkan isn't busy being a hired man, he works on a solo singer/songwriter project. His latest, Flightless Bird, is an Americana inspired ride through some interesting musical avenues.

Influences from rock, folk, jazz, alternative, and country converge on this record to produce nine tracks that are undeniably good. Outlined by Barkan's shimmering and often improvised guitar playing, the songs have a full band catalogue with a "live off the floor" feeling. The relaxed playing styles make it easy to groove away to this record while enjoying some fantastic, and understated, fret work.

Speaking about self-doubt, feeling ill at ease with ones place, and ultimate acceptance, Barkan has an interesting way with words. He seems to leave many dots for the listener to connect. His rough and booming voice is oddly soothing at the same time.

Flightless Bird has the composure, musicianship, and originality to really break out. Its complex and diverse sound is exciting to listen to and a pleasure to enjoy.
