Sidewalk program trimmed

Yorkton Council approved the City's 2011 sidewalk tender, but less work will be undertaken than initially planned.

City Engineer Moshiur Rahman said tenders were issued in June for the 2011 Concrete Sidewalks Construction Program.

"The 2011 Concrete Sidewalks Construction consists of the following; Argyle Street from Seventh Avenue S. to Second Street, Second Street from Argyle Street to Livingstone Street, Livingstone Street from Second Street to Co-op," he told the regular meeting of Council Monday.

"Only one bid was submitted for this program. This was from Mid-West Concrete & Paving Stone Ltd. for $109,565 without GST. The budget for the 2011 concrete program is $65,000."

Rahman said it was unlikely re-tendering would make a difference regarding the costs.

"Administration believes re-issuing the tender will not result in a different outcome. The prices that are being charged for concrete work reflects the growth experienced in this province from the previous year," he said.

As a result the proposed work had to be adjusted.

"Administration talked with the contractor to reduce the scope of work to Livingstone Street and Second Street and defer the work on Argyle Street to 2012. This will bring the project within the allocated budget," said Rahman. "The budget for this project is $65,000. This should accommodate the work outlined above as well as granular supply and a contingency based on 15 per cent."

Council unanimously accepted the tender for the reduced work schedule.
