Yorkton Tourism was again before Council at its regular meeting Monday to provide a brief look at the group’s efforts in 2015.
“As a four season destination we are involved in a range of activities aimed at growing the industry. Marketing, education, visitor services and information technology remains our focus to insure we realize maximum economic benefits for the city,” Neil Thom, president of Tourism Yorkton, told Council.
“Tourism is a significant revenue source for Yorkton’s hotels, museum, art galleries, restaurants, shopping facilities, events, festivals and many other endeavours. Combine that with the fact almost ten per cent of the city’s workforce is in tourism related industries and it becomes more important than ever to maintain a strong organization that can work with all the stakeholders to continuously improve our events and attractions.”
Thom said the organization will continue to work toward enhancing tourism.
“Tourism Yorkton also continued to maximize marketing and product development dollars through strategic partnerships with national, provincial and local organizations and groups,” he said.
Thom also took the opportunity to publicly note the recent accomplishment of the area in terms of snowmobile tourism.
“I would also at this time to publicly congratulate the City of Yorkton residents on being co-winner in the Sno-Riders West Magazine Sled Town Showdown Competition. As always it was rewarding to see the community support that made the award happen.
“Over 40,000 votes were cast from Yorkton and area that has put us on the map as a great place to visit and sled. Mayor Maloney if I could take this opportunity along with Jason Popowich, president of the Yorkton Sno-Riders to present this trophy to you which recognizes the support from Yorkton and the entire area,” he noted.
Thom, along with representative of Sno Riders Jason Popowich and Rick Bilous, presented the winning trophy to Mayor Bob Maloney.
