Children with mental and physical disabilities will have the chance to discover the joy of sports at a series of athletics camps.
Special Olympics Saskatchewan (SAS) is hosting a Try-It camp at St. Alphonsus gym for three days in May. The camps will be held on May 8, 15, and 29 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The Try-It camp offers children and parents the opportunity to experience SAS’s Active Start and FUNdamentals programs.
“It’s fun and safe,” said Caroline Krakalovich, SAS’s program coordinator for Yorkton and District.
The Active Start program is designed for children aged two to seven living with disabilities. Its a family-centered program that teaches basic motor skills such as running, throwing, jumping, and kicking.
The FUNdamentals program transitions kids from basic skills to sports-related movements. The program, designed for kids aged seven to 12, introduces participants to sports and competition.
SAS designed these programs to socialize and educate children with disabilities, while also providing a fun atmosphere.
“It helps them with their learning abilities,” Krakalovich said.
The programs are debuting in Yorkton. Krakalovich said if the trial run is successful, SAS will bring the full programs to town this fall.
Parents who wish to register their kids for either program can contact Krakalovich by phone at 306-621-7890, or by email at [email protected].
Krakalovich said anyone interested in volunteering for the Try-It camp can contact her phone or email addresses.
“We run on volunteers,” she said.
