A group of volunteers spent Saturday morning planting potatoes at the city's new community garden next to Yorkton Alliance Church.
The newly tilled garden, set on an unused parcel of land south of the church, was established this spring by the Assiniboine Food Security Alliance (AFSA) in collaboration with the Alliance Church.
Through the project, the AFSA hopes to teach the art of local food production to residents who have an interest in gardening but no means to do it at home. Volunteers with experience growing plants will mentor those with less knowledge.
Some of the harvest, including most of the potatoes planted on Saturday, will be used to supply fresh food to charitable organizations such as the Soup Haven and the Salvation Army.
The community garden project is starting small, but organizers expect to see its benefits spread as it grows and evolves in the coming years.
"It's always interesting what little things can lead to," said committee member Dwayne Kruger. "If you have that network of people working together, it can only come to good."
