Springside dogs adopted

All seven of the dogs rescued from a Springside-area residence last week after resorting to eating their owners' remains have been given new homes.

The Saskatoon SPCA, which took in the animals, reports that its evaluation of the dogs revealed no serious behavioral or health issues. There was "no indication" that the dogs-five shelties and two mixed breeds-could not be safely transitioned into new homes, said spokesperson Tiffiny Koback.

The original owners of the dogs, a rural couple near Springside, were discovered dead in their home early last week. They had been deceased for at least a week, forcing their starving dogs to consume their remains.

Police have confirmed no details about the death of the man and woman, but it is believed that the man, 67, killed himself after his wife, 57, succumbed to illness.

Neighbors of the couple and other outspoken residents of the province have been calling for the dogs to be euthanized, arguing that they are a hazard to any family that takes them in.

But many others defended the animals. The Saskatoon SPCA received an unusually high level of interest in adopting the dogs.
