For a seventh year, St. Paul’s School is promoting family literacy with a week of fun based on the One School, One Book program.
One School, One Book is the flagship program of literacy advocacy organization Read to Them that provides resources for teachers and parents and promotes the benefits of reading aloud to children.
These include developing better listening skills, building bigger vocabularies, understanding concepts better and feeling positive about both books and learning.
As part of the fun, each family was assigned a colour, which will come into play at the final celebration tomorrow night.
This year, St. Paul’s chose Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein. Touted as a modern Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by its publisher, the official synopsis reads:
“Kyle is a game fan—board games, word games, and especially video games! Kyle’s hero, the famous gamemaker Luigi Lemoncello, is the genius behind the design of the town’s new public library, which contains not only books, but an IMAX theater [sic], an electronic learning center [sic], instructional holograms, interactive dioramas and electromagnetic hover ladders that float patrons up to the books they want.
“Lucky Kyle wins a spot as one of the first twelve kids invited to a gala, overnight library lock-in filled with of fun and games. But the next morning, when the lock-in is supposed to be over, the doors remain locked. Kyle and the others must follow book-related clues and unravel all sorts of secret puzzles to find the hidden escape route if they want to win Mr. Lemoncello’s most fabulous prize ever.”
A week of activities kicked off last Wednesday, January 20 with a special music program for Kindergarten to Grade 3.
On Thursday the entire school got to enjoy a maze in an activity dubbed escape from St. Paul’s Gymnasium.
Friday, the fun continued with a treasure hunt, Monday was “Crazy Hat Day” followed by “Character Dress Up Day” yesterday.
Today is game show day and tomorrow is Team Colour Day. Everything will wrap up Thursday Evening in the gymnasium with various activities set out in stations.
