The Saskatchewan Abilities Council (SAC) officially opened its new state-of-the-art Yorkton recycling facility on October 18.
The plant is a culmination of an 18-year initiative to provide recycling services to the city.
Dubbed RecyclAbility Enterprises, the facility on Ball Road employs 18 people, most of whom have special needs.
"It's not just about recycling," said Ross Fisher, city councillor, who spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. "It's about the human aspect of it."
The City put up the capital to upgrade the plant with close to half a million dollars worth of leading edge sorting and baling equipment.
Fisher said the City hopes to recover the outlay over the next 10 years and that approving the expenditure was a way to ensure ongoing success of the enterprise.
"This is an investment in making sure they can be more efficient and more competitive with private industry," he said.
The new equipment will allow RecylAbility to process approximately 2,100 tonnes of paper, cardboard and household recycling, as well as, 200 tonnes of electronics equipment this year.
