Yorkton Fire Protective Services responded to a crop stubble fire that consumed the better part of a quarter section (160 acres) of crop stubble and cat tails just east of Yorkton on Hwy 10 May 20. A fuel truck being used to refuel tractors experienced a mechanical failure and caught fire. Recent dry weather and a substantial wind provided perfect conditions for the blaze to spread. Ultimately, the fire was contained by letting it burn toward a slough on the south and using deep tillage of the soil to prevent it from spreading north and east.
