Parkland College recently marked the conclusion of a Housing Maintenance/Essential Skills program at Keeseekoose First Nation. Seven students successfully completed the program and were celebrated at a ceremony on Feb. 17.
The program was run by Parkland College in partnership with Yorkton Tribal Council and the Keeseekoose Band. It consisted of five weeks in the classroom where students focused on building their Essential Skills, followed by five weeks of hands-on carpentry experience.
Each student learned the basics by building a dog house and a deck chair. Then together, the class built a mock wall to learn how to drywall, mud and insulate, and perform wiring. The final project was an ice fishing shack which was donated to Keeseekoose Chiefs’ Education Centre.
Parkland College delivers numerous Essential Skills projects every year in partnerships across the Parkland region. Essential Skills are the foundation upon which we learn all other skills, and are used in nearly every job and at different levels of complexity. The nine Essential Skills, as defined by the Government of Canada, are reading, document use, numeracy, writing, oral communication, working with others, thinking, computer use, and continuous learning.
