For the third year, Good Spirit School Division honoured Students of Distinction with a special plaque.

The award is part of the division's strategy of building positive school communities by recognizing one individual at each of 28 GSSD schools who has made an outstanding contribution.

In Yorkton schools those students were: Cole Esquash, Dr. Brass; Olivia Gordon, MC Knoll; Gavin Oystrick, Columbia; Matthew Balysky, Yorkdale Central; and Tristan Badger, Yorkton Regional High School.

The awards were presented throughout Education Week, October 21 to 25.

Nomination criteria include:

"A special connection to community initiatives reflected in the way in which the student is involved through both work and volunteer efforts;

"Performs exemplary work in school;

"Contributes to school and community spirit; and

"Exemplifies the values of Good Spirit School Division (belonging, respect, responsibility, learning, nurturing)."

An example of the kind of nominations the nomination committee received is an excerpt from Dr. Brass principal Jason Gordon's letter nominating Cole Esquash.

"In my capacity as Principal at Dr. Brass Community School, I have seen Cole Esquash grow as a mature young man since Grade 5," Gordon wrote. "He is a leader and is always committed to thinking of all students. This year the theme of Education Week in Saskatchewan is "Building our Future Together Today's Students are the Leaders of Tomorrow." Cole Esquash is a leader now and will have a positive impact in the future."
