Students pick their own mayor and council

Student Vote

The students of Yorkton might not be old enough to make a trip to the polls, but they did get a chance to practice. The student vote, hosted by CIVIX, gave kids a chance to learn about the electoral process by participating in their own mock election. Students from Dr. Brass Elementary, Dreambuilders, M.C. Knoll, Sacred Heart High School, St. Alphonsus, St. Michael’s School, St. Paul’s Elementary and Yorkton Regional High School all cast their ballots.

The race for mayor was not nearly as close as it was in the larger election. Bob Maloney received 302 votes from the kids, easily outpacing challenger Chris Wyatt’s 161 votes.

Calvin Tokarchuk received 53 votes, while Andrew Probe was at the back of the pack with 37.

The council would have looked different with the city’s students involved. Aaron Kienle, Ken Chyz and Quinn Haider were all as popular with the kids as they were with the adults, with 181, 167 and 288 votes respectively. Haider happened to be the top choice of both the city’s adults and students.

The other three candidates that struck a chord with the youth were Don Anderson, Dustin Brears and Mike Kirby, getting 187, 142 and 152 votes, respectively. If the kids were in charge, there would not be a single returning member of council, though Randy Goulden would have been the closest, with 134 votes.
