Have you ever wondered about your family tree? Researching the people and events of past generations in your family might seem like an overwhelming project, but the rewards and satisfaction of recording this information makes the journey back in time one that you don't want to miss!
Where to begin? Start by writing down the names of all family members, and their important dates: birthdays, weddings, dates of death. List your siblings, parents, great-grandparents, and go back as far as you can. Ask the oldest members of your family for any information that they can recall. What happened to Uncle Fred after the war? Why did only five out of seven of Gido's brothers and sisters come to Canada so long ago? What happened to the others? Ask as many questions as you can, and do it soon. When these elder family members pass away, your research will become much more difficult, because you won't be hearing all the fascinating personal details that make the memories come alive.
Once you begin your research, you'll be surprised at how many people are on the same journey of discovery. It's great to compare notes and exchange experiences. One of the best ways to learn about genealogy is to join others who are caught up in the mystery and intrigue of going back to the past. The Yorkton Branch of the Saskatchewan Genealogy Society invites you to join them! New members are always welcome. Circle October 11 on your calendar, that's the date of the next meeting. We will be learning about how the computer can be a helpful tool to go back to the past.
Our meetings feature interesting speakers and helpful topics . Meetings are the second Tuesday of each month, from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. Our meetings are usually held at the Library, but until it is open again, our meetings are at an alternate location. Please call Glenn at 782-7969 or Dave at 783-1093 for more details.
When you begin working on your family tree, you will be amazed at the great information that you will discover; you will also be amazed at how many records were kept, and are available for your perusal, if you just know where to look. Considering the time period that many of us are going back to in our research, there are wonderful records of births, deaths, marriages, land purchases, and so much more. Sadly, also, some information is lost in the mists of time.
