Teenager is clocked at 105 km/hr in school zone

It is not unusual for Yorkton RCMP to catch people speeding through school zones, but last week was a bit of an aberration.

Two teens had their vehicles impounded after police clocked them doing well more than double the posted speed limit.

The first incident occurred October 8 when a Pontiac Sunfire raced through the 40-kilometre zone at allegedly 105 kilometres an hour. He was arrested, charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle-a Criminal Code offence-and the Sunfire was impounded.

He will appear in court Oct. 21.

Much to local officers' surprise, the very next day while conducting their crackdown on school zone speeding at the same location, another car went flying by allegedly at 89 kilometres an hour.

The youth driving that vehicle was fined $396 and also had his ride impounded.

Local RCMP issued a press release Oct. 10 reminding the public to slow down in school zones.

Speeding in school zones carries triple the normal fine and travelling at more than 50 kilometres an hour over the posted limit can result in criminal charges.

Police will continue to proactively enforce school zone safety, the release stated.
