Pictured above is Michael Sobkow of Yorkton laying the last stone of a very large rosary measuring 100 feet by 45 feet. The rosary lays in the meadow by the church at St. Michael's Camp, Madge Lake. The rosary was a fundraiser led by Melanie Derow who believed the rosary would bring a new awareness to the camp and remind people that the camp is still running strong.
The rosary starts with a beautiful 5 foot cross which was made by a young group of campers on July 19th. It then continues with 59 stepping stones each containing a special message or memory which has been hand painted into each stone. The last stone has been dedicated to my 96 year old Baba Frances Sobkow formerly of Wroxton. She always inspired me to have a strong religious background with an appreciation for nature.
The camp has been situated at Madge Lake, Pickeral Point, Benito Subdivision for over 50 years. Michael Sobkow was one of the first children to attend the camp, his children attended and now his grandchildren attend. Throughout the years many families have been part of St. Michael's camp (formerly known as Camp Chabun). The families have come from mostly Ituna-Yorkton-Kamsack area, however we have families who come from all over Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba. Every spring AMPO which is part of Yorkton Catholic School Division brings out all of the grade 7's to enjoy a week of fun education in a relaxing natural environment. Everyone of all ages loves being out at our camp. As soon as you arrive you feel peaceful and relaxed as we often hear the comment it feels like coming home.
The donations have been greatly appreciated and are a blessing as they have helped us to run the camp and do minor repairs to our buildings. Our buildings are old and we are embarking on a new adventure of rebuilding our kitchen.
