Tourism Week was unanimously proclaimed at the regular meeting of Yorkton Council Monday.

"More than 1200 people in Yorkton are employed in tourism related industries, combine that with $38 million in travel receipts spent annually in the city and it becomes abundantly clear that the tourism industry plays a huge role in keeping Yorkton's economy vibrant," stated Tourism Yorkton president Neil Thom who made the request for the proclamation of May 14-21 as Tourism Week.

"With almost 100 tourism products and over 20 events, Tourism Yorkton continues to play an integral role to help ensure the success of individual businesses and organizations that make Yorkton a great place to visit."

Thom said the week is important to enhance awareness about the role of tourism.

"Declaring Tourism week provides an opportunity to showcase our city and province.

"With all the natural beauty, friendly people, and an incredible diversity of heritage and culture the reasons to stay and play become endless.

"The declaration also allows us to highlight the fact that all the local residents who bring friends, relatives and businesses to our events and attractions are the real ambassadors to the city where good things happen," he said.
