Saskatchewan law enforcement agencies handed out 168 tickets to motorists in their monthly traffic blitz dubbed Operation Hang Up, Buckle Up for January.
The January 17 and 18 focussed on non-seatbelt use and distracted driving. In 2012 distracted driving, which includes cell phone use among other offences, surpassed impaired driving as the top cause of motor vehicle collisions for the first time ever.
The 168 tickets issued include: 50 for improper or non-seatbelt use; 33 for cell phone use while driving; 28 for aggressive driving (which includes speeding, not obeying traffic signs or stop lights, unsafe passing, etc.); 20 for obscured vision (specifically, failing to clear frosted windows); four impaired driving charges and; 33 other tickets.
Last month's traffic safety blitz, Operation Overdrive, focused on impaired driving and took place throughout the entire month of December. That blitz saw law and traffic enforcement officers in Saskatchewan check more than 8,600 vehicles and issue more than 2,400 tickets, including 217 charges for impaired driving and 188 roadside suspensions.
