One adult man and one male youth are in custody for an armed robbery last month of the Mac’s convenience store on Smith Street.
At approximately 3 a.m. on December 17, 2015 two suspects entered the business wearing masks and threatened an employee with a knife. Before fleeing on foot, the suspects stole cash, cigarettes and food.
Last week, based on evidence gathered at the scene, RCMP arrested a 16-year-old boy on charges of robbery with a weapon, wearing a disguise with intent to commit a crime and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
On January 14, police announced they had tracked down the second suspect in Swan River, Manitoba.
James Reynold Brow, 19, is also charged with robbery with a weapon, wearing a disguise with intent to commit a crime and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Both accused have been remanded and scheduled for appearances in Yorkton Provincial Court, the youth on January 22 and Brow on January 28.
“We really want to acknowledge the hard work of the RCMP in catching these guys,” said Patricia Kozun, an employee of the store. “We have a very good video surveillance system that was a big help to [police].”
The video system was one of the security improvements the business made following the June 20, 2011 murder of 50-year-old Jimmy Ray Wiebe.
Kyle Furness, then a 21-year-old drug addict is currently serving a life sentence for second-degree murder. He will be eligible for parole in 2023.
