Yorkton Council proclaimed two special weeks in the city during its regular meeting Monday.

The Royal Canadian Legion, General Alexander Ross Branch #77 in Yorkton, appeared before Council requesting the week of Nov. 4 to Nov. 11 as Veteran's Week.

Peter Wyatt, president of the Yorkton branch of the Royal Canadian Legion told Council "2012 is another year we have a chance to say Thank You to those many men and women who so bravely gave themselves to give us the opportunities and freedoms that we have today."

The week will include several events, including a flag raising ceremony at City Hall Nov. 4.

"Poppy Tag Day begins our Remembrance Day Campaign and begins on Saturday, October 27, with the Cadets, Scouts and Cubs collecting for us," said Wyatt.

"Wreath sales begin Friday, October 26, with veterans and members of the Legion and other volunteers going to local businesses and selling the wreaths."

Sunday November 4, at 11:00 a.m. an annual church parade will be held for all Veterans at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church at 165 Second Avenue North.

The Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at the Farrell Agencies Arena in the Gallagher Centre Nov. 11.

Remembrance Day is a very important day to all Legion Veterans and members, said Wyatt.

"We would like as many citizens of Yorkton to join us and share in our Veterans remembrances and to celebrate the freedoms they gave us," he said.

Council unanimously supported proclamation of Veteran's Week.

It also unanimously supported marking the week of Nov. 4-10, as Agriculture Week in the city,

Juanita Polegi, Executive Director of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce made the request.

"Whereas agriculture accounts for one third of Saskatchewan's exports and one quarter of the jobs in the province, and whereas Saskatchewan became Canada's top agri-food exporting province in 2011; and whereas the agriculture industry significantly impacts the economy of the City of Yorkton with over 60 businesses directly involved in servicing the farming and ranching community; and whereas the Yorkton Exhibition will hold its 24th Annual Harvest Showdown Nov. 7 - 10, the Yorkton Exhibition Association and the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce respectfully request that City Council proclaim the week of Nov. 4 - 10 Agriculture Week in the City of Yorkton," she explained.

The week was again unanimously approved by Council.
