Learning through Community at the University of Saskatchewan
This fall the University of Saskatchewan is looking forward to welcoming first year students into a new community of learners. Students entering the Colleges of Arts and Science, Agriculture and Bioresources, Kinesiology, Engineering, and St. Thomas More, have the opportunity to join a Learning Community in the first term (September - December) of their first year, and together shape their environment and culture at the U of S.
A Learning Community is a small group of first-year students who sign up for a common set of courses linked by a weekly LC Hour. LC Hours are led by successful upper-year university students who are passionate about making connections between their studies and their world, and who lead by example as expert learners. Students can choose a Learning Community that fits with their interests, program goals, or the distribution requirements for their degree.
Learning through community at the U of S is all about making connections within, between, and beyond groups of like-minded learners. These connections strengthen new students' core competencies and expand their capabilities. Since 2007, Learning Communities students have reported feeling a stronger sense of connection to their peers, professors and classes, a more enriching university experience, and a clearer understanding of the program and career opportunities available to them. The Learning Communities team looks forward to another year of learning for all involved in the program.
To join a Learning Communities, we encourage first-year students to sign-up by JUNE 22nd at noon. To sign up for a Learning Community, click on the big red button on the LC website: www.usask.ca/lc
