Violet Kluk, Vice President, and Kathy Rusnak, Treasurer, of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League presented a cheque for $1,000 to Ross Fisher, Executive Director of The Health Foundation, to assist the breast screening program.
"We are really grateful for this donation," said Ross Fisher. "Several years ago when we raised the funds to put a digital mammography service in place, we knew we would have to occasionally upgrade that equipment. We have to rely on donations to help us put that money in place for the upgrades. Only three of the fourteen health regions in the province have digital mammography equipment, continued Mr. Fisher
"We wanted to make a donation that would have a real benefit, and we feel supporting the digital mammography program in place at the regional hospital will really do that. Many women suffer from breast cancer and the best way of dealing with breast cancer is early detection," said Violet Kluk. Having the best equipment possible in our hospital helps early detection. All women should go for mammograms," she continued.
"We can see all the work going on to plan for a new hospital said Kathy Rusnak, but that new hospital is going to require state of the art equipment to be really effective. We wanted to direct our donation to a specific program, and we know the digital mammography program will need to be upgraded at times. We are fortunate to have a digital mammography program here, we all donated to put it in place and we are all going to have to support it to keep it working for us, she continued.
We have over 100 members, but only about 60 are working members now, said Mrs. Kluk. We raise our funds in bake sales, selling perogies, donations by our members, raffles. All the ladies thought this donation was a good idea, because we all know how important early detection is with breast cancer.
