With new furnaces, water heater, carpet and a plan to renovate its functional, but outdated kitchen, the board of directors of New Horizons Seniors Centre on 1st Avenue is building for the future.
"We welcome all seniors and people who are going to be seniors," said Vi Stefanuk, the centre's contact person.
"Our volunteers work very hard to provide seniors with activities such as cards, games, social events and weekly dances each Friday night. We want our seniors to keep physically and mentally active and stay vibrant in our community."
The new equipment, which will help the centre stay alive, was made possible by a $16,500 grant from the federal government-sponsored New Horizons for Seniors Program.
In an "Appreciation Ceremony" on September 12, the board honoured Yorkton Member of Parliament Garry Breitkreuz.
Breitkreuz made a special effort to accept the invitation because, he said, it is rare that grant recipients make an effort to thank the government.
"I really wanted to come here to say thank you for saying thank you," he said. "I'm kind of reminded of a story in the bible where Jesus helped all these people and I think one came back to say thank you. When I was walking up here today, I thought of that so I really really appreciate that."
In addition to being a place where seniors can hang out and get their groove on, the centre plays host to youth groups, clients of the Saskatchewan Abilities Council and religious organizations.
The hall is also available for rent. Amenities include a large stage, tables and chairs, full kitchen, darts, shuffleboard and a regulation-size snooker table.
