In the 1940s Valentine's Day was an important festive time in schools. Usually the classrooms were decorated by both students and teachers. Home-made decorations of hearts cut outs, love messages and red crepe paper garlands filled the rooms. Children brought cookies and cake for the party that took place in the afternoon. During the war years, 1939-1945, valentines featured children in uniforms and war vehicles, but animals were always popular.
