Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff has proclaimed October 15-21 as Waste Reduction Week. This is the 12th year that the week has been organized across Canada with the purpose of educating people about the impact of waste on our environment, promoting the three R's of waste management - reduce, reuse and recycle - and celebrating our achievements.
"Saskatchewan has made excellent efforts to go green, with industry-led recycling programs for used tires, oil, paint and electronics keeping more than 38 million kilograms of material from our landfills in 2011, but we can always do more," Cheveldayoff said. "This week empowers us all to conserve our resources, reduce the amount of waste entering our landfills and sustain our natural environment. With the growth that Saskatchewan communities is experiencing, it is important for us to manage and reduce waste safely, ensuring the excellent quality of life citizens have come to expect."
In keeping with the theme for Waste Reduction Week, "Too Good to Waste", Saskatchewan communities, businesses and individuals are encouraged to plan activities to reduce the waste we generate and take action.
"We're thrilled that the Ministry of Environment has proclaimed Waste Reduction Week," Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council Executive Director Joanne Fedyk said. "Waste Reduction Week is a great opportunity to celebrate our accomplishments and to adopt new waste-reducing habits so that we can work toward a waste-free Saskatchewan."
