The big draw was made, and someone is one house richer thanks to the Health Foundation and Re/Max Blue Chip Realty. The first ever home lottery held by the Health Foundation saw Darrell Izzard of Benito, MB win the grand prize.
The lottery went fairly well, says Ross Fisher, executive director of the Health Foundation. While he admits that they wanted to sell more tickets, the lottery did make about $50,000, which he describes as pretty good.
“It feels good to give away nearly $250,000. There’s a whole series of happy phone calls to make now to let people know that they won. Those are easy and a good call to make, you get to make somebody’s weekend.”
Many of the winners were outside of Yorkton itself, which Fisher says reflects the usage of the hospital in Yorkton.
The money will be used to finish off the equipment campaign for the maternity ward in Yorkton.
The house was donated by Re/Max Blue Chip Realty, and Doris Shank pulled the name from the draw barrel. She believes its important for businesses like Re/Max to support the Health Foundation, and giving away a house has been rewarding for them.
“It’s a really good feeling. We as corporate citizens at Re/Max, we recognize that we have to give back to the community. If we all sit back for other funding to come in, whether the government or wherever, we could be waiting forever. So we have to step up to the plate and help this organization out, because we’re all going to need the services at some point in time.”
Shank says that in the future, Re/Max will continue to support the Health Foundation in whatever way they can.
