A much-needed clothing chairty event is making its return to Yorkton after a long absence.

The Coats for Kids project started up again on Oct. 16. It has been on a hiatus for nearly seven years.

“We had done the project for 18 years in [Yorkton],” said Deborah Schmidt, Chair of Coats for Kids. “Community requests [brought] it back.”

Coats for Kids collects winter clothing through donations. The group accepts everything from jackets to toques to snowpants. They ask families to give outgrown clothes to kids in need.

Schmidt says snowpants are one of the most needed articles of clothes.

“If kids don’t have them, they can’t play outside,” she said.

Coats for Kids will be collecting snow gear for the next two weeks before redistributing them on Oct. 28 at Yorkdale Central School.

Several groups across Yorkton are sponsoring the event, including Magic Mirrors, Century 21, Mark’s, and MEEP Creative Agency.

“I think what they’re doing is phenomenal,” said Kelly Litzenberger, Creative Director with MEEP. “Helping out in any way we can was a no brainer.”

Anyone interested in donating clothes can visit one of the three collection depots: Yorkdale Central School, Century 21, or Magic Mirrors.
