International Women’s Day is about supporting women from all backgrounds, and an event in Yorkton was focused on women from around the world who want to make Canada their home. The Canadian Federation of University Women and the East Central Newcomer Welcome Centre were partners at an event about Canada’s newest women, and providing support to them as they work to become part of Canada.

Registered Canadian immigration consultant Iryna Matsiuk was the speaker at the event, with a focus on family immigration.

“That’s the question that bothers a lot of people, especially those who can come to work here temporarily or study on a temporary basis. It’s quite challenging sometimes to bring the family over.”

The focus was on how families can immigrate, and touching base on the many different programs available for families as they come to Canada. Saskatchewan is focused on bringing more newcomers into the province, Matsiuk said, which means this is a province where people have a lot of questions about the process of immigration and how it affects their families.

“Immigration is not getting easier as a system, whether processing documents or applying. The more people we are bringing, the more questions we have to answer.”

The event was sponsored by the Canadian Federation of University Women. The goal of the event was to provide education for immigrant women and families and support them in their efforts to improve the lives of newcomers in the province.
