By the end of summer it will be easier to find business locations in the downtown core of the city.
Phil DeVos, executive director with the Yorkton Business Improvement District explained, the organization, in cooperation with the City of Yorkton is undertaking to address numbers installed on the doors of every business with the YBID zone.
DeVos said the idea came forward after an issue arose a number of months ago, when an ambulance had difficulty finding a business door which they initially thought did not have a number.,
"They did have one. It turned out it was two stories up," said DeVos. "We started talking about it then."
DeVos said it was recognized that numbers which were clearly visible would be an obvious benefit to emergency services such as police, fire and ambulances,
but installing the numbers also makes business sense, offered DeVos.
"There are a lot of new people coming into town," he said, adding street address numbers which are more easily seen will help newcomers locate businesses.
DeVos said over the years some businesses never installed numbers, others have numbers but are so small they are difficult to read from the street.
Working with the City's Building Services Department, the YBID established a standardized size and pattern for numbers and sent it to tender.
D's Signs and Designs won the tender and will not only produce the numbers, but will install them.
"They'll be working throughout the summer months, probably up to September," said DeVos, adding that 355 businesses will have the standardized numbers installed.
The project has a budget of $6000.
