The caption to this postcard says: "York Lake - Yorkton area appears to be a very wealthy community in the early days."
York Lake was originally known as Pebble Lake, and was a popular recreational site for York colonists and those that followed as early as the 1880s. The newspaper The Yorkton Times, in their August 5, 1909 issue carried the story of Yorkton's first annual water carnival. A crowd of about 1,500 people used the high bank on the north as a "bleacher" and watched the sailboat races, the rowing, the canoeing and swimming contests. The Town/City of Yorkton and the local Kinsmen Club sponsored it for decades. It was established as a regional park in 1969.
