Four adults living with disabilities celebrated the opening of their new group home in Yorkton on Feb. 21.
Dignitaries such as MLA Greg Ottenbreit and Mayor Bob Maloney attended the grand opening of the group home last Wednesday.
“I am pleased to welcome these four people into their beautiful new home that will support their inclusion into the City of Yorkton,” Ottenbreit said in a press release.
Yorkton Adult Independent Living (YAIL) Harbour opeates the group home, which is located on Good Spirit Crescent. Along with the new Yorkton home, YAIL Harbour runs three other group homes, a day program, and a supported independent living program.
“We are so thankful to our partners for helping us make a difference in the lives of our residents,” YAIL Harbour Executive Director Sonya Reviczky said in a press release. “I’d like to thank the government of Saskatchewan for their continued support.”
The provincial government supplied over $43,000 to furnish the new group home. They will also provide annual funding.
“I thank YAIL Harbour for their valuable contributions...through their work with individuals with intellectual disabilities,” Ottenbreit said.
Three of the four residents formerly lived at the Valley View Centre in Moose Jaw, which will be closing its doors in 2019.
The Yorkton facility is part of the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy, which was released in 2015. The strategy focuses on social and economic inclusion for people living with disabilities, along with safeguarding their rights.
