A pioneer is one who arrived first, or is among a group who was first to arrive at a location. They are considered to be the trail blazers, the ones who prepare the way for others.

LIST OF SETTLERS UPON FREE HOMESTEADS IN YORK COLONY-
They were from Eastern Canada, mostly from Ontario, the British Isles, Manitoba, British Columbia and the United States.
The entries from 1882-1885 approximately are part of the York Farmers' Colonization Company's first records. The Company agents continued to act as Homestead Agents for the Dominion Government until 1888, when their settlement agreement with the government ended.
-A homestead consisted of 160 acres/ a quarter section and it was free, with a $10.00 fee to register the entry on the chosen land. (List never before published)
