After a year like no other, 28 graduates from Canora Composite School celebrated their accomplishments with family and friends at King George Park on June 29.

After a year like no other, 28 graduates from Canora Composite School celebrated their accomplishments with family and friends at King George Park on June 29.

Dustin Nielsen, teacher and emcee for the graduation exercises, reminded everyone in attendance that, “It’s awesome that we get to do this today.”

During the Entrance of Graduands, Nielsen introduced each graduate and what makes each of them unique.

Fr. Joakim Rac led the gathering in prayer and shared his thoughts on the significance of this day.

“I asked a young man, who just finished his five-year studies at university, which books helped him the most during his studies,” said Fr. Rac. “He answered, ‘There were two books that helped me the most, my mom’s cookbook and my daddy’s cheque book.’

“Be thankful to your parents, be thankful to your teachers, your community, your friends. Be thankful always for so many good people in your life. In no other period of life will you make so many important decisions, as you will in these next years. And almost every decision that you make-whether it be a vocation, school, job or marriage partner, will depend on the goal that you have chosen for yourself.

“How is it that one sailboat goes one way and the other the opposite way, while the wind blows in only one direction? It is the set of the sails that makes the difference. So it is with us. The winds of life beat upon us, but the direction that we take in life depends on the set of our sails, on the goal that we have chosen. To choose a goal is to give purpose and meaning to life.

“So, to sum up; be thankful, make your life meaningful, be responsible. And for that, we need God’s help and blessing also.”

Fr. Rac closed by leading those in attendance in the reciting of The Lord’s Prayer.

Shannon Leson addressed the graduates and shared remarks as a representative of the Good Spirit School Division.

“It is my pleasure to bring greetings on behalf of the GSSD Board of Education. Since starting school in kindergarten, you have enjoyed the simple things; participating in classroom and extra-curricular activities, sharing noon hours together, and having morning talks at your lockers. When you returned to school this past fall, your environment looked and felt very different. Wearing a mask every day, physically distancing, and periodically transitioning to remote learning became the ‘new reality.’ Throughout this time, you have exemplified the GSSD value of ‘perseverance’ by demonstrating the tenacity and persistence necessary to do something difficult, but you were determined not to give up.

“Throughout this year, you were likely wondering what your graduation day would look like. A day, which is marked to celebrate your achievements before your family, friends and community, needed to look different. The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged you to engage in your education, find alternate ways of connecting with your friends, and celebrating your accomplishments in a different way, Graduates of 2021 you have persevered!

“Graduates, the promise of a brighter tomorrow is truly in your hands- it will be the lessons you have learned through hardship and the skills you were taught in school, from your parents, and through your community that will guide you along. Though the road ahead may also present challenges, I have every confidence that you have developed the qualities and skills to overcome future hurdles and to achieve great things.

“Your graduation is an important milestone- it symbolizes your many years of hard work and commitment. Thank you graduates, for your commitment to your school and the Good Spirit School Division. You will always be remembered as the ‘Resilient class of 2021.’ You truly represent our vision of ‘Learning Without Limits… Achievement For All.’ Congratulations.”

Terry Dennis, Canora-Pelly MLA, congratulated the 2021 graduates on their achievements.

“It’s an honour to be here today and to be a part of this celebration. You have battle through your Grade 12 year during some of the most challenging times in recent history! As you move on to the next phase in your life, I’m sure this pandemic will serve to make you embrace a wide-open future moving forward. Whether you pursue post-secondary education, career training or join the work force, remember that Saskatchewan has many great opportunities to offer.

“I would also like to congratulate the parents. You have done a wonderful job of moulding these young adults to be the leaders of tomorrow.

“Grads, this is a special day, and I encourage you to reflect on the family, friends and teachers who have supported your efforts. Enjoy the celebration and have a safe evening.”

The program concluded with a ceremonial dance, where proud family members eagerly joined their graduates on the dance floor.

Brandi Zavislak, community development officer said the day was a great success.

“The Town of Canora was happy to help organize the event, in collaboration with the teachers and the grads, they’re a great group.”
