On February 25, 2020, shortly before 10:00 p.m., local healthcare providers were called to a residence in Sandy Bay, Saskatchewan, to provide medical care to an unresponsive male. The healthcare providers were treating the male, discovered he was seriously injured and transported him to the local health centre. Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful and the male was pronounced deceased.

The deceased has been identified as 33-year-old Darnell Bear. His family has been notified of his death.

As the injuries Mr. Bear sustained were suspicious in nature, the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crime Unit (MCU) took the lead on the investigation. MCU investigators were assisted by Sandy Bay and Pelican Narrows RCMP, as well as Prince Albert and Tisdale Forensic Identification Services.

As a result of the investigation, 31 year-old Thomas Johnny Bernard Ross of Sandy Bay was arrested without incident and has been charged with Second Degree Murder, Section 235(1) of the Canadian Criminal Code.

Ross will make his first appearance in Pelican Narrows Provincial Court this afternoon (February 27, 2020) at 2 p.m.
