There are times when special experiences happen in life. They may seem very insignificant to some, but to others, they become great moments which are not found in everyday life.
In mid March, Women’s World Curling was held in Swift Current. Many from the area where I live, drove there to attend different draws, rooting for the Canadian team as well as for others.
The day of the opening ceremony, my grandson Nolan, was one of the junior curlers chosen to walk out with the team from Sweden. Junior curlers were picked from the area after short essays they had written about their love for the sport was reviewed. From many entries, Nolan was chosen and he got to spend an enjoyable day with the Swedish team and watched the curling. Others junior curlers were chosen to go with other teams.
The parents received complimentary tickets for the day. Nolan received a Swedish team jersey and a jacket, along with other items. He got a tour of the mobile control centre where the broadcasting took place. He, in turn, presented a Saskatchewan gift to each team member and the coaches – a Saskatchewan Roughrider blanket and a Canadian flag. This was a pretty exciting day for a soon-to-be 13-year-old Grade 7 student from Fox Valley School.
Unfortunately, I did not get to see the opening ceremony as it was not televised on TSN, but many photos were shared and I understand some of the opening ceremony was shown on several Saskatchewan TV stations.
For the young curlers chosen for that day, it was a special time for them. Keep the joy of the game in the future and who knows, maybe some day we will get a chance to see you in a different role in the game.
