For those interested in helping to improve the appearance of downtown Canora it would be a good idea to set aside July 11-15 on the calendar, said Brandi Zavislak, community development officer.
During those days, volunteers involved in the ‘Pay it forward Canora Revive Group’ (CRG) project will be painting and restoring the business fronts of several Main Street businesses.
As community development officer, Zavislak said she usually hears first-hand what people are thinking about Canora.
“One of the biggest complaints I receive is that exteriors of the buildings on our Main Street look old, unkempt, or even abandoned,” she said. “After doing countless hours of research, I came up with a positive solution.”
Zavislak had some grant money that was available to be used for paint and supplies.
The labour portion of the project will be coming from volunteers. Her research indicated there are several other communities that have found success with similar community improvement programs.
Thus far there are a number of local business owners, contractors and students who have indicated their interest in taking part.
All Canora adults and youth are welcome to volunteer.
CRG is partnering with Canora 4-H on this project as a way of valuing Canora youth, encouraging volunteerism and showing them they can make a positive difference in the community, said Zavislak. The project teaches youth life skills that are likely to benefit them in future projects they take on. At the same time, adult volunteers working side-by-side with the youth have the opportunity to be positive role models.
