Assiniboine River Archery Club holds another successful 3-D shoot

The Assiniboine River Archery Club held its annual 3-D shoot on August 12 and 13 at the Dale and Chad Swetlishnoff farm near Canora, said Desiree Owchar, club president.

About 140 archers from across Saskatchewan took part in the competition, coming from as far away as Weyburn in the south and Spiritwood in the north.

Owchar said archers have come to appreciate the challenging setting of the competition.

“The geography includes hills, trees, and all the challenges to really test your archery skills, including spots where you need to shoot between branches to hit the target”, said Archer.

But not everyone comes to the event as a competitor. Some enjoy walking the scenic courses and watching the participants do their thing.

At last count, the Assiniboine Archery Club had 33 members, ranging in age from six to 17, she said. The members and their families do the majority of the work in preparation for the annual 3-D archery shoot.

Two special awards are presented each year to deserving members: the Travis Sleeva Memorial Award and the Colleen Tiechko Memorial Award, said Owchar. These awards go to the male and female archers in the club who display a love and dedication for archery, good sportsmanship and are always willing to lend a hand, qualities which the club encourages in all of its members.

The 2017 Travis Sleeva Memorial Award went to Everett Paley.

“Everett has been a member of our club for three years, starting when he was nine years old. Everett is a very quiet, respectful individual. He has a great attendance record and is always there to help out. He displays a positive attitude and is a fantastic role model for the younger archers.”

The Colleen Tiechko Memorial Award went to Makayla Heshka, who, according to Owchar, was deserving of the award in her own unique way.

“Makayla has been a member of our club for three years, starting when she was six years old. Makayla is (also) a respectful individual, with a good attendance record and always willing to help. Makayla is a little spitfire, full of life and pizzazz. She always comes to me and says, ‘Guess what my score was today.’ Good or bad, she always displays a positive attitude.”

The first Assiniboine River Archery Club 3-D shoot was held in 1992. Over the years the popularity of the event has grown to where, for this year’s event, it attracted close to 100 different sponsors.

Sponsorship support includes two new bows, one pink and one camouflage-coloured, awarded to one boy and one girl by draw. This year the pink bow was won by Cairwyn Bailey, sponsored by Renegade Plumbing and Heating. The camo bow went to Everett Paley, sponsored by Preeceville Archery Products. Both winners are members of the Assiniboine River Archery Club.

The competition is made up of two courses. The A course has targets of animals commonly found in Canada, while the targets on the B course, also known as the exotic course, are native to other countries.

Scores are kept for each of the two days, and then added together for an aggregate total.

The competition is split up into various categories and age groups, giving everyone an opportunity to win, whether new to the sport or an experienced competitor.

Hunter-male

The hunter-male competition was won by Dean Bocking, with a Saturday total of 348 points and a Sunday total of 345 points, for an aggregate of 693. Mike Owchar finished second with an aggregate of 638 points, while Travis Buzinski was third, with a score of 590.
