Canora 4-H Homecraft Club Achievement Day recognizes member accomplishments

The Canora 4-H Homecraft Club Achievement Day was held on May 12 at Rainbow Hall.

The Canora 4-H Homecraft Club Achievement Day was held on May 12 at Rainbow Hall.

Bev Spearman, who is stepping down after eight years as general leader, teamed up with Daylia Lukey, club president, to lead the reciting of the 4-H pledge, which is the practice at the opening of all 4-H meetings.

Spearman told those in attendance that she believes 4-H is the greatest youth organization in the province, and encouraged them to tell their friends about 4-H.

“Club leaders are volunteers,” said Spearman, “but having the opportunity to pass along knowledge to young people which will serve them well in the future makes it a very rewarding experience.”

The club members, ranging in age from eight to 13 years, are: Zennia Lukey, Jeffrey Severight, Braidyn Nesbitt, Daylia Lukey, Natalie Kosar, Skya Manley and Jesse Shannon.

The focus of Achievement Day was on the year’s cooking and sewing projects.

Members involved in the sewing group were Shannon, Severight, Nesbit, Manley and Zennia Lukey.

Spearman said it was very encouraging to see noticeable improvement in the group’s sewing skills in the time period from the completion of the first project, aprons, to the completion of the second project, pajama pants.

All seven group members were involved in the cooking group, led by Alyssa Lukey.

“It was very enjoyable and rewarding to see their progress, as some didn’t even know how to crack an egg at the beginning of the year,” she said.

The cooking group made muffins as a year-end project, including pumpkin, pumpkin/raisin and blueberry, which were available for those in attendance to enjoy at the Achievement Day.

Sewing club members pay for their own sewing kits and club fees, but materials and access to sewing machines are provided at the club for no extra cost. Similarly, all supplies for the cooking group are purchased by the club. Spearman said this is done to eliminate financial barriers for 4-H families as much as possible.

She is optimistic that membership will increase in the coming years.

After Spearman’s departure, Maureen Babb will serve as sewing leader.

Alyssa Lukey will take over as general leader, and continue serving as cooking leader.

Door prizes for the Achievement Day were provided by: IC Sales & Service, Nehaj Building Centre, Canora Auto Electric, Home Hardware, Teamworks Design Hair Salon, Community Insurance, Canora Leisure Services, Northstar Chicken & Pizza, Gabano’s Pizza, Canora Sewing, Tim Hortons, Doreen Severight, Crossroads Credit Union, the Canora Dairy Bar and the Parkland Regional Library.
