After a shaky start to the season, the Canora Composite School junior boys basketball team is gaining momentum after defeating Sturgis Composite High School.

The team began its season on December 7 with a close game against Sturgis that was won thanks to some missed free throws by Sturgis, said Jeff Davis, who coaches the team with Paul Dockrill. The team manager is Colin Knight.

Members of the team include Hudson Bailey, Jacob Danyluk, Jayden Bisschop, Jake Statchuk, Brayden Ostafie, Decan Cybak, Carson Barteski, Jessie Biletski, Grady Wolkoski, Daniel Sanderson, Matthew Rock, Alden Baron, Jacob Gulka and Carson Ostafie.

Games that were played against Norquay School on December 14 and during the two-day tournament in Kamsack on December 16 and 17 were all losses, but when the team returned after the Christmas break, it defeated Sturgis once more during a game on January 5.

Though Sturgis had the lead after the first quarter, Canora’s team “stepped up the tempo” to lead by the third quarter and maintain that lead until the end with a final score of 52-47.

The Canora Composite School junior boys basketball team was to play a game against Kamsack Comprehensive Institute on January 16. Its next game at Canora Composite School will be against Norquay School on January 26.
