Decoration Day services were held at the Canora Cemetery on June 5 by members of the Canora branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Traditionally held on the Sunday closest to June 6, which commemorates D-Day, the service included a message by Wilf Michaels, the Legion’s padre, who spoke about family values, sons and daughters and the importance of children.

Everyone who perished during military conflict was someone’s child, Michaels said. “We have to protect our children from all perils.”

Canora air cadets joined Legion members for the service which included the laying of wreaths and decorating the graves near the cenotaph located in the Legion’s area of the cemetery.

Following the service, Lynda Belanger of Owen Sound, Ont., the first vice-president of the Owen Sound branch, and a long-time friend of Chris Sokoloski, was given the honour of presenting him with the Legion Service Medal.

Laurie Negraeff won the draw of the wagon loaded with items that had been raffled to raise money for the branch.

A reception in the Legion Dugout followed the service.
