Teams that are part of Canora Minor Hockey played hard in the games leading up to their novice tournament, which was to be held January 14.

Canora Novice Red kicked off another round of Friday night hockey on January 6 with a game against the Langenburg Novice Warriors. The game at the Canora Civic Centre ended with Langenburg winning 13-3.

“We came out strong against Langenburg but they had a few players we had trouble shutting down,” said coach Nicole Korpusik, who said the team learned quite a lot during the game.

She commended Jack Korpusik, who made two goals, and Kale Strelioff, who scored one, as well as the goalie.

“Walker Wolkowski, who isn’t quite seven years old, made some big saves!”

The Canora Peewee Cobras ended the weekend by taking on the Yorkton Premier Cabinets Peewee Terriers at the Kinsmen Arena on January 8. The team lost 20-1, with its lone goal made by Jake Statchuk and assisted by Logan Lewchuk and Logan Wolkowski.

Both Canora atom teams got some practice in during the January 11 game at the Canora Civic Centre. The Canora Atom Cobras Red played against Canora Atom Cobras Black in a close match that Atom Black won 4-3.

Tracey Bletsky, manager of the Atom Red team, commented that there is an apparent friendly rivalry between the players.

“These players have played together and against each other on the same local teams, switching up the rosters each year. Some have played together for as long as seven years,” said Bletsky, who commented that spectators could visually see the extra effort put forth by the players in one of the most exciting games this season.

“The players from both teams have made us all proud.”

All three goals for Canora Atom Cobras Red were scored by Nate Wolos. Assists were by Hunter Lamb (two), Wyatt Wolkowski and Rhett Ludba.

Canora Atom Cobras Black goals were made by Briel Beblow (three) and Chase Hembling. Assists were by Taye Shukin and Chase Hembling.

The Canora Atom Cobras Red and Atom Cobras Black teams were to play against each other again on January 15 as the end of the first round of games in the atom division in the league. New game schedules are to come out this week for the playoff round.

The Canora Novice Black and Red teams had a friendly game on January 12 at the Canora Civic Centre, which was won by the Canora Novice Black team, according to Jeff Sznerch, coach for the Canora Novice Black Cobras.

“All the kids played well and had fun,” he said.

With that match, the novice teams were prepared for the home novice tournament that was to be held on January 14. The next home game will be between the Canora Peewee Cobras and the Kamsack Flyers on January 20.
