An old mobile home far in rental arrears to the City will soon be demolished to allow for the pad to be rented again.

“The City of Yorkton owns and operates the Mobile Home Park in the southeast corner of the City, north of King Street. This mobile home park is home to 97 tenants. Tenants are responsible to pay lot rent and a portion of taxes on a monthly basis, which are due on the 1st of every month. The tenants themselves own the trailer; however the City owns the land and rents the pad to the tenants. Historically, the City has attempted to work alongside the tenants at every juncture to ensure they maintain their homes and ensure that the City actively provides affordable housing options to residents of Yorkton,” explained Amber Matechuk, City Controller, at the regular meeting of Yorkton Council Monday.

After years of administering the collections and maintenance of the park, the City is experiencing substantial delinquent payments with certain tenants, she continued.

When necessary, Administration follows the direction and procedures outlined by The Residential Tenancies Act, 2006. This legislation provides protection for the interests of the tenant, and as such can be a lengthy process to administer, said Matechuk.

That process was undertaken on one property.

“As of December 31, 2016 the tenant owes the City $9,435.78 for unpaid rent and taxes dating back to December 2014. Given the authorization recently received to dispose of the property, it is unlikely the tenant will be paying the balance owing. As of January 2017 Administration has stopped generating rent and taxation revenue from this property,” said Matechuk.

In December the City received authorization to dispose of the abandoned property.

Now that the City has received authorization to dispose of the abandoned property, Administration will be preparing to remove all of the abandoned property from the land pad. Once this has been done we will attempt to secure a new tenant to move a mobile home onto the pad and start generating revenue, said Matechuk.

“Due to the insignificant value of the abandoned property, condition of the abandoned property and the time it would take to prepare items for sale Administration will be looking at a demolition and removal,” she added.
