Reading together
Under the theme of building our future by reading together, Rod Steciuk, CJES principal, read to the student assembly from I am Yoga, by Susan Verde on October 19. The book contains suggestions for relaxing exercises, as part of the school’s effort to reduce student anxiety.

During Education Week from October 15 to 21 at CJES (Canora Junior Elementary School), students assembled on October 19 to read together while working to reduce student anxiety.

One of the themes for Education Week was “building our future by reading together”, said Rod Steciuk, CJES principal.

Steciuk read to the students at the assembly from a book called I am Yoga, by Susan Verde. In addition to reading together, the activity gave the students some relaxation ideas.

This works into the CJES goal for student well-being by giving them tools for cutting down anxiety.

The exercise served as a kick-off in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program, which has been utilized at CJES for a number of years. The students read assigned books, are tested on them, and are awarded points according to the results.

Steciuk said the AR program has made a significant contribution to high reading results achieved by CJES students.
