Close Cuts for Cancer is making sure that hospitals in the Parkland Region have the most up to date equipment for cancer treatment. There's still new frontiers to be conquered for cancer treatments, and the new mammography equipment, which Close Cuts successfully raised funds for, is just the start.
“Well, the Terriers decided to a Pink The Rink last year in support of cancer research,” said Greg Ottenbreit of Close Cuts.
“Last year, we teamed up with the Health Foundation through Close Cuts [for Cancer] local initiatives to do some fundraising for the digital mammography upgrade in town. That commitment's been fulfilled over the last couple of months, but the Terriers have still decided to partner with us through the Health Foundation. Again, [all] local to fundraise for additional local cancer initiatives through the Pink The Rink game. At Brayden Ottenbreit's Close Cuts for Cancer, we're very honoured to partner with the team again. They're a community icon in the Yorkton area, the Terriers; to again promote cancer initiatives and support those families that are going through cancer.”
Leone Ottenbreit also shares the Terriers' enthusiasm. The funds aren't just used for the treatments themselves. Often patients must travel a great distance to get the medical support they need, and that means having somewhere to stay. That can be financially devastating and so, help to ensure families can be there for recovery is crucial.
“Our local cancer initiatives program involves funding one night stays at the Regina Cancer Patient lodge, or week stays at the Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon,” says Leone.
“Of course, we always partner with the cancer initiatives of the Health Foundation, and we also fund the needs of cancer for the friends if they have any needs, and then we also have a celebration program where every child that is diagnosed in Saskatchewan gets a ComfyCozy, which is a chemo-accessible shirt – and then a trophy at the end of their treatment. That's just something that we started a number of years ago that we still carry on with.”
