Effective February 4, Parkland College announced the appointment of three new members to its board of governors: Don Bahrey of Canora, Brian Hicke of Melville, and Leonard Keshane of Keeseekoose First Nation.
“It is a pleasure to welcome our new governors to Parkland College,” said President Dwayne Reeve. “We will certainly benefit from the experiences and perspectives they bring to the board of governors.”
Bahrey worked with Parkland College for eight years as an instructor and program co-ordinator, retiring in 2013. He said he hopes to rely on his knowledge as a past employee to help move the College forward.
“It’s going to be a little bit of research abd a little bit of reading before I can really say where I can help, but I’m looking forward to it,” Bahrey said.
Leonard Keshane, A former chief of the Keeseekoose First Nation, has worked closely with the College on several education and training projects at Keeseekoose and through the Yorkton Tribal Council.
“I really appreciate what the College can do for First Nations people,” Keshane said. “I also believe it’s good for the board to have that First Nations perspective.”
Brian Hicke is a longtime Melville resident and city councillor. He serves on numerous other boards, committees, and community organizations in the Melville area.
“I hope to bring some experience with our communities and what I feel the communities might need in the way of continuing education,” said Hicke. “The opportunity to learn trades and different kinds of skills locally is a huge benefit to this whole area.”
The Parkland College board of governors meets monthly to oversee the College’s operations and provide direction and guidance on institutional decisions. Board members advocate on behalf of the College and support efforts relating to regional economic growth.
Bahrey, Hicke, and Keshane bring the board of governors to a full complement of seven members. Sally Bishop of Kamsack is the longest-serving current governor, having joined the board in 2009.
